2 DAY WORKSHOPS SATURDAY 9 – SUNDAY 10 SEPTEMBER 2017

WOODCUT/MONOPRINT
Tutor – Rosalind Atkins
Create a woodcut then further explore the possibilities by utilizing the block as the matrix for monoprint experimentation. In this workshop participants will learn the process of cutting the block and printing a single colour image.  After completion of this part of the workshop the matrix will be used to create a series of unique monoprints working with stencils and layers of printing. INTRODUCTION TO WATERCOLOUR
Tutor – Julian Bruere
Start with the fundamentals. Explore flat wash concepts, wet into wet washes and colour mixing, paper selection, materials and brushes etc. Working through a series of exercises build the primary skill required for watercolour painting. It is expected that this workshop will build confidence in the medium and open avenues to some exciting outcomes in both realistic and abstract painting. Introduction

PAINTING PENGUINS AND SEALS
Tutor – Katherine Cooper
Did you know there are 18 species of penguin, 6 species of Antarctic seals plus the sub-Antarctic Elephant Seal?    During these two days we will concentrate on how to accomplish those incredible natural textures and colours using graphite and watercolour wash with gouache detail. Some reference material will be provided but if you have your own special subject reference material, by all means bring it with you. All levels.

IMPRESSIONIST WATERCOLOUR
Tutor – Julie Goldspink
Build your confidence with watercolour using this versatile finely woven cotton surface. With Still Life as the subject, working on watercolour canvas, tap into your imagination. Explore this forgiving surface to create impressionistic outcomes by applying the wet in wet method of painting. You will be drawing with your paintbrush so any mistakes can be easily remedied! All levels

ABSTRACTING THE GRAMPIANS
Tutor – Peter Griffen
Working with exciting colour, collaging, glazing, splashing, scraping, drawing, with images of the Grampians in your mind, marks will be made, colours put down, shapes created and the mind and line taken for a walk. There will be total freedom to express oneself in non representative ways. Follow demonstrations participants will be free to proceed at their own pace, pursuing their own ideas with individual help as needed. All levels

MONOPRINTING WITH COLLAGE
Tutor – Mandy Gunn
Learn how the various techniques of monoprinting can be combined with collage, resulting in prints incorporating layers of both printed and found papers, a number of colours and unusual textures. Emphasis will be on materials found in the environment such as plants.  Collage of prints onto more 3 dimensional surfaces such as cardboard which can be built up in layers is also included. All levels.

EXCITING COLLAGES AND MIXED MEDIA CONSTRUCTIONS
Tutor – Gabriella Hegyes
Experiment with various materials; including paper, fabric, metals, wires, plaster and surface finishes to explore and develop ideas. This workshop offers participants a glimpse into various techniques such as manipulating paper (stitching, paper lamination, paper  moulding) frottage onto fabric and paper, and working with other natural materials like soils, plants, leaves, twigs and resins, onto muslin and paper to incorporate into 2 dimensional or 3 dimensional works combining drawing and painting elements. All levels.

YOUR OWN STORY IN WATERCOLOUR
Tutor – Terry Jarvis
Learning how to tell your own story in the wonderful medium of Watercolour. Discover the techniques and foundations that release you and develop you into all that you can be as you paint and enjoy the journey. Explore the materials required to produce and convey great watercolour messages. An understanding of paper, brushes, pigment, and how to use them will be the theme. Introduction

CHARCOAL DRAWING
Tutor – Robert Knight  
The focus of this workshop is to create drawings as a finished art work. Learn skills to assist you in analysing the subject, demystify the artistic process and to simplify complicated subjects and use technique to draw dynamic art work. Robert will demonstrate and tutor in a step by step easy to follow approach. All levels.

PEN AND WATERCOLOUR
Tutor – John Mathieson
Learn how to use pen and ink in your paintings so you get a feel for inks – characteristics and applications. Then explore combining ink with watercolour to create a wonderful variety of scenes focusing on streetscapes and buildings. The workshop will focus on drawing to assist you to capture perspective to produce charming sketches in different styles.  All levels

DRAWING SIMPLE SHELLS IN PENCIL WITH COLOUR
Tutor – Mali Moir
Draw Bivalve shells with simple curving shapes in graphite pencil, then add colour with colour pencils or dry brush watercolour techniques. This approach of easily applying coloured over a detailed pencil drawing is a quick and pleasant way of creating a colour painting. Great for people who are more comfortable with pencil work but would like to produce pictures in colour. ALL LEVELS.

VEGETABLES AS BOTANICAL ART
Tutor – Kate Nolan
From the ordinary to extraordinary. Although we deal with them every day (if we are healthy eaters!) vegetables are far from ordinary when examined as artistic subjects. We will work on creating a beautiful realistic botanic artwork, from start to finish- out of the simple pleasing organic shapes and textures of garlic, beetroot and the like. Media is watercolour on paper and all skill levels welcome. All levels

LIFE DRAWING

This workshop will offer a concentrated drawing environment working from life models. Each day will contain a variety of poses and exercises often using unconventional tools to broaden a student’s drawing vocabulary. COLOUR THERAPY
Tutor – Suzie Riley
Using pastel with a methylated spirits wash, we will create paintings with a focus on colour and tone. Learn how to create your own unique colour palettes, strengthen them with shape and tone to form a slightly abstract work. All levels.

OFF THE WALL
Tutor – Heather Shimmen
Transform your ideas into linocuts and discover ways in which other processes such as drawing, sewing, and solvent transfer, to name just a few, can be incorporated to make three dimensional objects. There will be demonstrations of image transfer, cutting a block and printing. A simple book with pop up elements can be created or perhaps a hanging work – give full rein to your creativity! All levels

ILLUSTRATING FOR CHILDREN’S PUBLISHING
Tutor – Anne Spudvilas
An insight into illustrating a  picture book – we’ll go through the process from receiving the initial text to storyboarding ideas, gathering reference material, creating dummy books and finally doing some sample illustrations.   Designed to help you prepare your book idea for presentation to a publisher.   All levels.

FEAR OF COLOUR
Tutor – Lars Stenberg
In this workshop students will learn techniques and approaches to handle colour. We will explore materials, pigments, and approaches to mixing and applying paint to create rich, harmonious paintings. We will look at how colour helps us express how we feel about what we paint. The workshop will focus on acrylic paints. Intermediate

PORTRAITURE IN OILS
Tutor – Samantha Tidbeck
Working from the model as well as from the mirror- this course takes students from a fascinating anatomical study of the head, neck and face through to a no-nonsense approach in confidently achieving a good likeness as well as strong, interesting artworks. Exercises begin with drawing in a variety of media and move to alla prima or direct painting technique.

ETCHING WORKSHOP
Tutor – Rosalind Atkins
Learn the basics of creating an etching from plate preparation, transferring of the image, drawing on the plate and processing before printing a small edition. In this workshop the image will be created through the use of line drawn with a needle onto the surface of the plate.  Instruction on the processing of the plate will demystify the process of etching and printing.

PORTRAITURE
Tutor – Julian Bruere
Begin by learning the fundamentals of facial proportioning, viewpoint and lighting for portraiture in a mix of watercolour, carbon pencil, pen or charcoal.  Working from life is very important in portraiture hence some drawing will be explored using each other and a mirror for self-portraits and face exploration.  There will be some development exercises using squaring up processes, mirroring and trace.  It is expected that each participant will paint or draw in a very individual and personal manner at the end of 4 days.  Intermediate

HAWKS AND FALCONS – THE SMALLER RAPTORS
Tutor – Katherine Cooper
Brown Falcons, Hobby’s, Kestrels, Swamp Harriers are stunning birds of prey possessing unique feather detail and character.  We will discuss the various differences between the subjects and, during this 4 day class we will cover the areas of composition, subject placement and how to capture the ‘essence’ of the subject (as quoted by Australian Artist WT ‘Bill’ Cooper) using watercolour/gouache.  All Levels

SPONTANEITY WITH FLOWERS OR FRUIT
Tutor – Julie Goldspink
Explore watercolour expressionism, combining geometric and organic shapes to create your individual design. You will be encouraged to experiment with different means to arrive at your design: eg vignetting, creating different textural outcomes, random approaches that focus on light sources and negative painting that will trigger your imagination. All or some of these applications will enhance and give inspiration to bring your flower paintings to more than 2D artworks. Take your watercolours to a new level! All Levels

EXPRESSIVE RESPONSES TO THE LANDSCAPE
Tutor – Peter Griffen
Working with Grampians landscape as the subject matter to respond to, you will be encouraged to create images in a loose way. Not “copying” but instead creating your own depictions that are inspired by the Grampians but not restricted by it; but with more thought to creating imaginative variations.
The use of exciting colour, collaging, glazing, splashing, scraping, drawing, etc will all be encouraged as in the previous workshop. All Levels

THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF MONOPRINTS
Tutor – Mandy Gunn
Explore the exciting creative possibilities of monoprinting (one off prints) using drawing, mark making, painting, stencils, layering, dissolving and more, with colour, texture and materials from the environment.
There will be some optional participation in Heather Shimmen’s lino cut workshop to discover how monoprints and lino cuts can combine to make complex layered prints as used in their collaborative work. All Levels

ENCAUSTIC: MIXED MEDIA
Tutor – Gabriella Hegyes
Experience the versatility of this rich, organic (bees wax) medium as you explore a selection of encaustic techniques: including image transfer, incising, smooth and textural painting as well as embedding textiles and other materials into bees wax. Combine relief work; 3 dimensional elements including plaster, found objects and relevant techniques to incorporate with 2 dimensional art works. All Levels

OIL PAINTING

See the landscape in a different way. Create a more ethereal oil painting with a contemporary feel. Build a greater insights into materials and techniques with a limited palette, painting in a loose atmospheric style. Use expressive brush strokes and a palette knife to add interest to the art work. TRAVEL SKETCHBOOK AND DIARIES

Travel sketching is a quick and easy way to record your holidays and travel experience. Pen & watercolour is the easiest, fastest way to build drawing and painting skills. You’ll learn how to journalise your travels, discuss how to build sketching into your travels, where to start, capturing your subject quickly, simplifying complex architectural subjects, tips on composition, tips on including people in sketches, and the importance of shadows. DRAWING AND PAINTING SPIRAL SHELLS
Tutor – Mali Moir
This is a workshop designed to help you understand how to construct a drawing of a spiral shell. We will explore the fundamentals of the strict structured forms found in spiral shells using drawing exercises which help you ‘think 3 dimensionally whilst drawing 2 dimensionally’. Working up a final artwork can be in your chosen medium, be it graphite pencil, colour pencil or watercolour paint.

BOTANICAL ART- HAKEAS
Tutor – Kate Nolan
Hakeas typify the unique and complex beauty of the Australian Flora. In this course we will work to depict the hakea as a botanical artwork, studying the scientific and aesthetic details which are particularly important to this genus. Watercolour on paper will be the medium and this course is possibly better suited to botanical artists with some experience. All Levels

ACRYLICS AND MIXED MEDIA WITH COLLAGE
Tutor – Vivi Palegeorge
In this 4 day workshop, students will be pushing the boundaries of representational art, with the use of collage and mixed media.  Backgrounds will be abstracted and subject matter simplified to create exciting and unique pieces of art.  This workshop will allow the artist to not only learn how acrylic paint interacts with mixed media, but how to let go and let their imaginations take over.  Intermediate 

LANDSCAPE IN WATER BASED MEDUIMS
Tutor – Herman Pekel
Concentrating on tone, shape and colour this workshop in watercolour, acrylic etc (anything that you can mix with water!) will explore Herman’s quick and direct approach to painting. Herman will take you on a step by step journey through his style of water based painting, including plein air. This workshop is designed for artists wanting to advance to a new level of competence in watercolours. Advanced

DRAWING

Everyone has a drawing style within them that is valid and interesting. The difficult part of drawing (or any kind of art making) is to pursue what it is that you have within – rather than what you have been led to think you should pursue. The workshop aims to help unlock your core drawing style/approach and add techniques to help you pursue your drawing on a new level.

VARIATIONS OF A THEME
Tutor – Suzie Riley
Over the course of several days we will take a journey to abstraction. Beginning with a representational work, each day refining and developing a different version until we have reached a degree of abstraction.  Colour harmonies, tonal balance, shapes and relative mark making will be the focus with an emphasis on developing your own personal style. PRINTMAKING AND BEYOND

Linocutting (& monoprinting)
Be inspired by the Grampians. The emphasis will be on developing printmaking skills in linocutting by exploring cutting and image transfer techniques, using stencils, chine colle and many experimental colour applications. During the workshop participants have the option to learn how to make a monoprint (a unique print) with the Mandy Gunn workshop. These works can be combined with your linocuts to produce exciting  printmaking and other media!  All levels

CREATING A CHILDREN’S PICTURE BOOK
Tutor – Anne Spudvilas
A thorough immersion in the process of illustrating.  We’ll explore getting inside the character, understanding your strengths, photography as an aid (bring your camera) reorganising pages to finally work out the complete layout of a book.   There’ll be lots of time to draw and paint and discover the right medium for your story. EXPLORING THE PROCESS
Tutor – Lars Stenberg
In this workshop students will become confident with colour harmony and sketch development in landscape painting. Using versatile acrylic paints we will develop finished work from sketches, studies and photographs. The workshop will take us through the process of recording the landscape using sketches and digital media, developing these records into studies, and completing a final work. Intermediate

INSPIRED BY THE MASTERS – FROM THE STUDIO LOOKING OUT
Tutor – Samantha Tidbeck
This class explores the idea of the studio still life with a background looking out to a landscape or another space. A popular device historically: we will focus on the work of one of four major Masters:-  Diego Velasquez, Henri Matisse Max Beckmann and Margaret Olley. Students then take their cue from the techniques, ideas and themes to use in their own series of studies and paintings.
